CHAPTER

FIVE

Girls of Valor

The very next day, I found a place to go to called Girls of Valor Shelter for Teens and Young Mothers. The place seemed very neat and the rooms were freshly painted in beige and the floor had some shiny tile. Although the shelter seemed very good, the Director didn’t seem that nice at all. Mr. Darton was indifferent and ignored all of his staff and participants needs. I was only there for one day, and I already got three complaints about him. The workers have said they over heard him say he should be at a better job. He doesn’t hide his urge to complain all the time.

This was a small private shelter and it only housed thirty girls. Most of the staff were pretty burned out because of the extra load at work and Mr. Darton. He kept threatening to fire them all of the time because he was so unhappy.

“Hello, young lady. Here is a handbook with all of our rules and regulations, while you are here,” said Mr. Darton.

“Oh, thank you.”

“If you want more information, you need to ask Mr. Wiley, the Resident Supervisor or Ms. Beanman, the Resident Aide. This isn’t really what I do. I’m just here to make sure things run smoothly,” he said.

“Oh, well this seems like a nice place from what I see.”

“It looks nice but quite honestly, it’s time for me to move on. I’ve been looking for another position for some time now,” he said bluntly.

I was very taken aback by how cold Mr. Darton was. There had to be a good reason, why a Director would answer a new resident in that way.

“Well, how long have you been working at Girls of Valor?” I asked.

“Oh, too long! It’s been a while. That’s why I have to be somewhere else. I will keep on looking until I find a new position. Try not to take what I say personally,” he added.

“Uh…I’ll try not to.” Although I was already offended.

“In the meantime, you could go to Mr. Wiley and Ms. Beanman’s office. It’s the first door on your right-hand side. Just walk straight down this hall. He will introduce you to the others,” said Mr. Darton.

“Thank you.”

As, I walked away from Mr. Darton, I shook my head in disbelief at how matter-of-fact he was about finding another job. That was a very unlikely greeting from a Shelter Director. As I got closer to the door for Mr. Wiley’s office and Ms. Beanman’s office, I overheard him speaking on the phone. So, I politely waited until he was done before I came in the office.

“Yes, dear. I’ve told you a hundred times before, not to worry. Everything will be just fine. Yes, dear. I love you too and Happy Anniversary,” he said. “Bye.”

Well, that’s nice that he found some time to call his wife for their anniversary. I was a little nervous. I thought all of the other staff would be just like Mr. Darton. Looks like Mr. Wiley is different.
